Engineers at London Container Terminal are responsible for maintenance, repair, fault finding, installing and operating a wide range of port machinery, equipment and electrical infrastructure. Key items include the high and low voltage power networks, Straddle Carriers (1/4 high), Ship-to-Shore container cranes (Paceco & Liebherr), forklift trucks, Bromma spreaders, VGM weighing equipment (in line with SOLAS requirements) and commercial vehicles.

Engineers are liaising with our customers and contractors daily and are responsible for organising and maintaining accurate maintenance records. A key element to this is reporting any damage or misuse to Supervisory staff and liaise with operational staff to inform of timescales for repairs. Whilst in the role engineers will develop an in-depth working knowledge of plant equipment and associated drawings in order to minimise downtime when repairs take place. Ensuring compliance with legislation, safety protocols and important tasks are completed within the required timescales are the main priorities of a port Engineer.

What are we looking for?

• You must be a time served qualified Electrician or Mechanical Engineer and have previous experience of working within an industrialised environment
• Some experience of AC/DC control systems, PLC’s and HV/LV would be advantageous
• Being comfortable working at height / outdoors
• Full UK driving license

Operations Planner & Administrator

Key duties involve documenting, recording and communicating resource allocation, processing overtime using our internal system, use of our integrated HR/Payroll system to record absences, raise POs and work closely with the Operations Management Team and Accounts to record all related cargo and customer charges.

Our administrators are experienced and capable having worked in the fast-paced and dynamic port, transport and logistics environment. They are organised, efficient and have a good attention to detail to allow accurate recording of all container, vessel and yard operational information. Their IT skills are exceptional as is their aptitude with data entry systems.

A key part of container handling is managing the movements of shipping containers within the Port, a role in which many of the current Terminal Management Team have learned their trade. Any new operatives are required to drive specialist high-tech machinery, including straddle carriers, within one of the UK’s busiest container terminals. Straddle carriers are used in container ports around the world and are a distinctive piece of machinery which moves containers which arrive by ship and transports them either onto trucks or rail for their onward journey. London Container Terminal has 36 straddle carriers and offers a bespoke training programme for new straddle drivers who use the company’s new training simulator to help prepare them for this highly skilled role.

A new starter would begin with three weeks of one-to-one training in driving the equipment and general Port operations with one of our accredited RTITB trainers. After passing, you will be given full responsibility to work alongside the team on the Terminal.

Visitor Information

All visitors to London Container Terminal (LCT) must pre-notify the terminal in advance of their arrival and provide vehicle registration details. As LCT is located within a designated ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) secure zone, all visitors are required to obtain a temporary security pass.

This pass must be collected from the ISPS Security Office before proceeding to the LCT gatehouse. The ISPS Office is located on the left-hand side, just inside the main entrance to the Port of Tilbury.
